Hills: Sit or Stand?
2010/08/16

I was asked in a tweet last week if a rider should sit or stand when climbing a hill on a bike. I wish I could give a one-word answer, but that isn’t possible. As I’ve said so many times here in responding to reader questions, my answer must often start with “it depends.” This one is no difference. Here’s what this answer depends on... Over the weekend the crew from Holla trails mountain bike park played host to yet another outstanding race event in the Balito area. Following on from the successful Golovane Classic, the “Explore’s” emphasis was on teams of two completing an 86km course through the Balito and adjacent sugarcane fields. Initially climbing 35km to the escarpments edge the teams were the asked to descend down along a sublime single track through an indigenous forest periodically crossing the valley bottom stream. From here it may have seemed plain sailing but the 3km climb up to Howards bush was the undoing of many of the participants. With gradients reaching 20% and temperatures soaring to 37oC the 300m of vertical ascent proved to challenge even the strongest riders abilities. The riders were however well rewarded with ice cold water and bananas at the top before barreling down along tight and technical single track to the crocodile farm at the bottom (a great touch from the race organisers!). ...

I met Shaun at the Pick ‘n Pay 94.7 Cycle Challenge expo in November 2008...the Training Bible South Africa (TBZA) stand was one of the last before the exit, and there I found myself chatting to my soon to be coach! I wanted a new challenge, something different, and had been toying with the idea of completing an Ironman event for a while. Right there & then, whilst talking to Shaun, I committed! I would start training with TBZA in Jan 2009, with an aim to finishing Ironman in 2010!...
